Cloud-Based Phone Systems: Debunking the Myths

I was perusing through a popular online magazine and I came across an article that left me slightly confused at the amount of misinformation that surrounds "cloud-based phone systems".

An extremely important point that must be made was that, while this seemed like a helpful article for business owners, it was no more than an advertisement for a cloud-based phone system provider.

We strive to find the best solution for our clients and avoid pushing them into any solution that does not adequately meet their needs. In doing this we have discovered that the cloud is not always the best solution.

One misconception of a traditional phone system is that you have to be next to your desk phone to make calls from the phone system. This is simply not true. Many closet based systems have robust mobile applications that work with both Android and iOS operating systems. In addition to mobile integration, some systems allow users to unplug their phones, take them home, and use them as if they were in the office. It is also possible to add remote phones to a closet system.

Another myth of the cloud-based telephone system is that it is the only was to utilize a softphone, a piece of software that allows the user to make telephone calls over the Internet via a computer. Almost every phone system, cloud or closet, has a softphone. This can add efficiency to a phone system with features like click-to-dial from Outlook, Websites, and CRM applications.

Cloud providers boast that they have a low amount of service downtime and very few disruptions because there are redundant backups within the cloud. However, this is reliant on the internet, so if your internet service is disrupted, then your cloud-based system cannot reach any of those redundant servers.

The final point to be made is that cloud-based systems are not necessarily cheaper.

Which begs the questions: Why is everyone talking about cloud-based telephone systems?

The answer is not a perfectly simple one.  You first have to realize that what is the thought process behind the question.  What we believe is being stated is that what we have is not really being utilized by the talented people we have in our work force.  It isn’t keeping up with the trends of communication, isn’t flexible enough nor does it have features that we desperately need.

And the problem becomes more complex when talking with a cloud-based seller of such a platform.  They often only perform sales and the objective of the sale is position you into the mindset that you buy what they have to offer.  Often they have never installed a phone, don’t understand how the phones communicate to each other and could not tell you how to read a packet capture, the cardiac record of the call as it happened.

So what is different to Rottweiler Systems cloud-telephone system? First we sit down with you and listen to what your current needs are.  This is a big deal because it meets you were you are.  Second, we’ll design, install and train your users on the premise where they are installed within.  If paging needs to be installed we do it.  Recordings within an auto attendant, those too.  In fact we will install every single part and component necessary for a successful system.   Then we will build a vpn to the reach every single phone within the system.
