Lack of Security Contribute To Two More Tragic Deaths, by Duke Smith

The recent shooting death of 19-year-old sophomore Jasmine Lynnat Spelman College have brought together many in the community to address the issue of crime in Atlanta.  Reported by CBSAtlanta.comon September 4th Rev. Howard Creecy stated; "There is a crisis of violence in our community.”  Jasmine came to Atlanta for an education.  Other areas that surround Atlanta are also effected by the violent crime that seems to plague Atlanta.

Fantasia Byrd came to Roswell, Georgia to escape the violence of New York and would discover that she would not find that safety she needed in the Chattahoochee Landing Apartments located in Roswell, Georgia.  With no security cameras posted that could have recorded the crime, officials are looking for witnesses.  An entrance and exit security camera by the gate would have recorded a time when vehicles had exited and pointed those officials towards the individuals responsible for the crime.  The upcoming law suit should educate the owners reasons why you should not overlook apartment complex security.  What infuriates me is that it could have been avoided with some basic steps taken to deter the crime in the first place.

Security cameras are a great deterrent to crimes of opportunity.  If individuals that are looking to commit a crime see cameras installed and signs posted, they have a tendency to move on down the road.  Chattahoochee Landing should have had these installed and honestly all apartment complexes need to have security cameras installed and in plain view which would have discouraged this crime from happening.  Another cost saving decision for the owners of this complex.  This foolish choice is not as uncommon as you might think.

Litigation involving the apartment complex security is one of the most common types of security related liability lawsuits as can be testified by the Peter Law Firm, litigation attorneys of this type of liability.  Protecting the lives and property of apartment complex residence occupants should be a major concern when developing a property.  In metro Atlanta, our Interstate system is extremely efficient for travel.  This efficient system also brings people into apartment complexes for the purpose of crime as well.

Each apartment unit also needs to have a security system installed as well to inform the property renter that no one is in the property when they enter it and to inform them when maintenance is being performed on the property.  Our notification systems are excellent for this type of access.  You can change codes online while at work to allow for maintenance and then disable the code when they are finished.  Thus you know when someone enters the property and when they exit the property.
