Just the other day we had someone call to inquire if we had any work available. What made this very different from all other applicants was that this individual was perfect for a sales position with our company. His ability to roll with the conversation as it progressed was quite surprising and he articulated himself well too. So, why didn't he jump at the opportunity to earn twice what he is making doing labored tasks? In my opinion, fear. Fear of rejection, fear of failure, fear of income potential and fear of facing what appeared to be a mountain of tasks that he had to learn. This got me thinking and here is what I came up with on how you can make money in a down economy.
First, don't panic if you have lost your job. Almost 100 percent of our business clients are still in business and they still use the products and services we provide, they just down sized to weather the storm. Which for you means that you could use that as leverage to earn a living. For almost two years businesses have strategically positioned themselves to cut costs and save money. Use that strategy to your advantage. It's simple, find something that you can provide them with and do just that, provide it.
For Rottweiler, we started doing that with our Business Advantage Choice Rewards when gas was at $ 5.00/gallon! It has proven to be our life line through this economy. Also known as BACR, it gives many ways for a business to get what they need without paying top dollar. Simple 0% leasing for new purchases, lower costs for Dial Tone and Internet services, Business Telephone Systems or Business Security Systems, VoIP services and with percentage points off on half a dozen services and credits for future purchases. Tell me what company does not want to save money!
Second, be willing to try something that you are not familiar with. I started 30 years ago training to be a telephone technician, now all these years later I still am, however I also now write a BLOG telling you how to make money in a down economy and run a security company second to none. Be open to taking that part time job or even a short out of town employment opportunity. Basically, be open and willing.
Third, regroup and train for your next opportunity. If you do not have the educational skills, get them. Take the class and learn something that will keep you current when employment opportunities open for the field that you would prefer to work in. Have you updated your Microsoft training? A new employer probably will require it and your employment competition will have the skills, take the classes!
Fourth, exercise and eat right. Starting a drinking habit, returning to a smoking habit, eating too much or laying on the couch or a "whoa-is-me campaign" will not get you to where you need to be. If you take care of yourself you then will experience some movement forward.
Before you do all steps mentioned above or produce your own version of "start earning money in a down economy", remember God's economy is never in recession. Establish that relationship first and the rest will follow in the direction that it needs to progress. Ask him direction, steps to take or direction you should progress towards. When you have that road map, it is much easier to follow and you usually end up where you needed to. Along the way, you also will find that when you lean on Christ, he is strong enough to hold you. More importantly no matter what else can be thrown at you in life, you will find a resource you can count on. If you don't you probably worry or panic. That choice is yours to make.
