Over 90 % of all victims of crime felt that they thought it would never happen to them. Yet, according to the FBI national statistics, there is a violent crime every 24 seconds, an aggravated assault every 48 seconds, a murder every 23 minutes. To help our clients in Georgia understand that crime is real, we have a link on our Home page to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Although the statistics are from 2007, they are pretty close to the level we are seeing today.
You actually can avoid being a victim if you take just the basic levels of security seriously you can actually avoid the loss caused by burglary or home invasion. In my own life my first exposure to an attempted break-in to my own home occured when I was out behind my home and noticed a screen that was somewhat bent in the middle. Curiously I took a second look and when I did it was obvious to me someone had tried to open the window from the outside. So lets take a closer look at what burglary is.
According to the Bureau of Justus Statistics, US Department of Justice household burglary is defined as: Unlawful or forcible entry or attempted entry of a residence. This crime usually, but not always, involves theft. The illegal entry may be by force, such as breaking a window or slashing a screen, or may be without force by entering through an unlocked door or an open window. As long as the person entering has no legal right to be present in the structure a burglary has occurred. Furthermore, the structure need not be the house itself for a burglary to take place; illegal entry of a garage, shed, or any other structure on the premises also constitutes household burglary. If breaking and entering occurs in a hotel or vacation residence, it is still classified as a burglary for the household whose member or members were staying there at the time the entry occurred.
And according to them, there was a steady decline from over 10% down to only 40 households per 1000 for the years that the statics were run. It all good for those that are the 960 homes, but what about the other 40 that were broken into! Don't be one of them, take action.
Crime is continual. It happens every day and thankfully we have police officers that are willing to protect and defend, at their risk I might add, for our safety. Adjustments in the economy is not a reason to install a security system. You should install and maintain one for your home AND your business. This insures that you have at least taken the necessary steps to avoid being the next statistic in the chart by being in the 90 % that did something to avoid being a victim.
